I Think I Broke It! Free online help for your everyday computer problems

About

Launched in early March 2006, this site aims to be a handy technical resource site for all those PC problems that make you want to eat your own hat (if you had a hat that is).

Through the Ask a Question section, anyone can post a question asking for help regarding a PC problem, whether it's hardware related, software related, or just a simple "Where's this?".

I've got a degree in Computer Science (from Keele University), and I'm currently employed as an Network Manager at a school. I have a love for all things 'computer', and since an early age I've immersed myself in all the information I could find regarding these curious little boxes with rodents attached.

I don't claim to know everything, that's impossible, and it would be down right arrogant for anyone to say or believe something like that! But I do have a 'knack' for troubleshooting computer problems (probably because I love it so much!), and I help out where I can on a few forums (the Custom PC forums being my favourite, look for 'nilknarf2').

After years of helping hundreds of people here and there with computer related issues, I started to realise that I often have to repeat the same information to different people. It thus dawned on me one day that having an online 'archive' to store computer problems and their solutions would be handy, not just for the people I'm trying to help, but for myself also:

  • People can search the archive while I'm not available, hopefully solving their problems much faster than would normally be possible,
  • If they can't find a solution in the archive, the ask a question section will allow a quick reply from me, and eventually yet more information will be added to the archive,
  • On forums and in emails I can simply post links to previously asked questions in archive, rather than typing out pages of the same information again and again (which will in turn give me more time to answer questions and help other people more efficiently).

Also, not all information on the site will be stored in the archive. In some cases, with complex subjects or often requested information, I will write articles/guides - these will range from one page for relatively simple things, to many pages for larger subject matter.

Over the coming months I hope that this site will grow to become a valuable resource for all that use it, and for those who help develop it each day by posting new questions.

A special thanks must go out to my girlfriend Nikki, as without her hard work on the site, none of this would be here.

Enjoy the site!
- Mike
